Burrowing Owl Basics
Flight
Angry owl hovers above nest intruder
If disturbed burrowing owls will usually sound the alarm call and fly a short distance with short choppy wing beats and an uneven flight pattern. They are surprisingly good fliers, capable of rapid flight, often at low levels. Their flight patterns are erratic with rapid wingbeats and jerky flight, but also long glides. As a migratory bird that may travel hundreds of miles each spring and fall from the breeding grounds, they must have the stamina for sustained flight but the pattern of their movement is not well understood.
